The Work, Health and Safety (WHS) Operations Section is responsible for the consistent implementation of WHS systems, strategy and standards across all Groups and Divisions. Our operational team are the ‘boots on the ground’ who play a pivotal role in enabling the department to have a unified approach to implementing WHS by providing oversight, guidance, and support to front-line staff and Managers.
**The Job**
A Senior WHS Advisor - Parks, will play a critical role in contributing to Parks Australia’s purpose to protect, conserve and enhance the values of Commonwealth parks and gardens for the use and well-being of all Australians. This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference in some of the most remote and interesting parts of Australia. Our national parks range from Christmas Island and Pulu Keeling far out in the Indian Ocean to Norfolk Island in the Pacific, Booderee on the NSW south coast and World Heritage-listed Kakadu and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Parks in the Northern Territory.
In this role, you will provide support to a specific National Park, ideally living and working in a location near to the Park. You will be co-located with your clients where possible and work closely with local management on WHS matters. You will report to the WHS Assistant Director (located elsewhere), joining a large and dynamic WHS function who are passionate about health, safety and wellbeing, and who support a diverse department with a unique risk profile. As part of your role, you will be responsible for promoting the advancement of safety culture and systems in your National Park, actively managing WHS performance and developing trusted advisor relationships with employees. You may be required to oversee a small team during some projects and will ensure that risks are managed appropriately.
You will be responsible for:
- building WHS leadership and capability within your location and work area, helping to embed WHS functions and activities into daily work to promote positive WHS performance
- upskilling our people on WHS matters, such as identifying, assessing, and controlling risks (both physical and psychosocial) and building understanding of the importance of incident and hazard reporting
- contributing to the development and implementation of a site-specific WHS approach that is aligned to the departments’ WHS strategies, that includes inspections and that outlines any mandatory audits
- promoting increased understanding, awareness and use of the department’s incident management system (SIRUS) through training, coaching and support
- acting as a key point of contact for your area on WHS related matters, providing accurate and useful advice and support aligned to WHS policy and relevant legislative guidelines
- supporting the implementation and review of site-specific risk controls and registers, ensuring that critical risks are documented, and appropriate controls are implemented
- undertaking WHS audit activities as per developed assurance guidelines and processes
- conducting incident investigations (if they should occur), while providing support and advice to Parks staff in accordance with the departments’ WHS policy and procedure, and relevant WHS legislative guidelines
- advocating for the strategic goals of the broader WHS team, supporting the implementation of new WHS initiatives, programs and systems, contributing to planning and identifying opportunities for improvement.

**What we are looking for**
**Knowledge and experience**
Mandatory:
- Knowledge of risk management frameworks and WHS incident investigation approaches.
- At least five years’ experience working in a similar WHS role.
Highly desirable:
- Experience working with Indigenous Australian employees and within Indigenous communities.
- Experience working in remote and isolated locations.
- Experience in promoting advances in safety culture and safety systems.
