The Animal Welfare and Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring that SAHMRI complies with all aspects of the NHMRC Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (the ‘Code’), the SA Animal Welfare Act, ethics policies and relevant legislation.
Reporting to the Manager, Research Office, the position will also work closely with other Research Office staff, Managers, and staff of Bioresources (North Terrace) and Pre-clinical, Imaging and Research Laboratories (PIRL) (Gilles Plains), Animal Ethics Officer, and the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).
This role can be offered either as one full-time role working across both SAHMRI sites at North Terrace and Gilles Plains or as two part-time (0.6 FTE) roles primarily based at each site and able to crossover to provide continual support to both sites.
About the role
Key responsibilities include:
- Advise on scientific, veterinary and ethical issues associated with animal research at SAHMRI, and ensure that all activities relating directly or indirectly to animal use and care are in accordance with acceptable veterinary standards, the standard articulated in legislation, guidelines and by the SAHMRI Animal Ethics Committee.
- Report to AEC formally on veterinary issues and matters of animal welfare, including relevant veterinary, welfare, training, and competency issues.
- Conduct post-approval monitoring of projects, including audits of record keeping, and ensuring compliance with activities as approved by the approvals, legislation, policy, and other AEC requirements.
- Manage the formal reporting and resolution of adverse events, complaints, and noncompliance issues, including investigations on behalf of the AEC.
- Contribute to the provision of veterinary services at Bioresources and PIRL when required.
About You
- Degree in Veterinary Science registrable in South Australia is essential
- Knowledge and experience in working with animals in a research environment, and a demonstrated understanding of experimental procedures used on animals for scientific and research purposes
- In depth knowledge of the NHMRC Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific purposes and the SA Animal Welfare Act, as it relates to use of animals for scientific purposes
- Strong commitment to animal welfare
- High level of interpersonal, analytical, and well-developed communication skills
- Ability to adapt and respond flexibly to changing situations
- Demonstrated ability to set goals, develop priorities and meet deadlines
