About the Role

The Principal Analyst will support the development and prosecution of an integrated portfolio strategy across all commodities. The role will support the Wholesale Markets functions in developing strategic direction for business development, portfolio supply, sales, marketing and growth opportunities. The role will interact with a range of stakeholders across AGL, including Finance, Risk, Business Customers and Customer Markets to ensure the Wholesale Markets strategy meets the requirements of the wider business.

This role is also responsible for leading a team who in turn provide high-quality analysis, develop sophisticated models and provide research and reporting services to the Wholesale Markets functions. They deliver analysis, commercial insights and makes recommendations that drives the strategic direction and decision-making process, to effectively manage the Trading, Fuel Supply & Origination and Physical Markets functions.

What you’ll be doing:

- Lead the preparation of reporting insights through presenting results in a meaningful way to affect the planning, pricing and management of the wholesale portfolio by using existing sophisticated/complex models/database and/or develops new complex models/database
- Lead the delivery within cross-functional teams on ad-hoc projects to align business objectives
- Deliver and drive high-quality end-to-end analysis to support the decision making process(es) that allows for effective management of the wholesale portfolio
- Accountable for supporting refreshed fuels positions and ensuring they reflect contracted and prospective contractual and/or market changes including changes to load forecasting
- Lead the preparation of reports that detail the impacts of changes to fuel positions to functions within Wholesale Markets and influence changes to ensure the group operations achieve or exceed financial and budgetary target throughout the year
- Provide key insights to deliver the understanding of the financial as well as physical risk exposures inherent in all deals so that robust processes can be developed or adapted
- Build models that can be used to create trading and optimization systems for various fuels, which will allow trading and optimisation of positions

About You

What you’ll bring to the table:

- Highly autonomous with the ability to take initiative, influence and drive results
- Computer/IT skills
- High level of competence in leading modelling that utilises Excel, Python and SQL
- Creative/Imaginative skills - The ability to see linkages between apparently unrelated matters (Intellectual curiosity) and therefore develop and deploy new or unusual or creative approaches to problem solving
- Writing skills - Clear, concise, accuracy of grammar, punctuation, spelling. Wide vocabulary - but with the ability to use the simplest possible terms to convey the desired message
- Presentation skills:

- This role may be required to communicate in larger or public forum; however visual communication of complex concepts is required (graphics, charts, effective Powerpoint skills)
- Strong analytical skills with experience of trading systems and portfolio valuation techniques
- Advanced MS Excel skills and ability to use VBA or other similar coding languages
- Proven ability to understand complex problems and design innovative solutions
- A tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline preferred (e.g. mathematics, engineering, statistics, physical science, economics)
- Energy market experience strongly preferred
