About the Role

We currently have an exciting new opportunity for a Principal Analyst in the Trading Analytics team. The role will provide leadership and development to a team of analysts that provide clarity on the various commodity portfolios. This involves providing market analysis, competitor analysis, insights on global supply/demand and external market forces.

The Principal Analyst will support the Trading Team in developing, identifying, and implementing sophisticated hedging and trading strategies to optimize the AGL portfolios. The role will interact with a range of stakeholders across AGL, including Finance, Risk, Business Customers and Customer Markets to ensure the Trading strategy meets the requirements of the wider business.

This team is responsible for the provision of high-quality analysis, the use and development of sophisticated models and providing research and reporting services to the Trading team and the wider wholesale markets functions. This role delivers analysis, commercial insights and makes recommendations that drives the strategic hedging / trading direction and decision-making process, to effectively manage the Wholesale portfolios, and in the development and implementation of market-leading value-creating strategies.

What you’ll be doing:

- Preparation of reporting insights through presenting results in a meaningful way to affect the planning, pricing and management of the wholesale portfolio by using existing sophisticated/complex models/database and/or develops new complex models/database
- Lead the delivery within cross-functional teams on ad-hoc projects to align business objectives
- Deliver and drive high-quality end-to-end analysis to support the decision making process(es) that allows for effective management of the wholesale portfolio by the Trading team
- Provide key insights to deliver the understanding of the financial as well as physical risk exposures inherent in all deals so that robust processes can be developed or adapted
- Perform real-time trading analysis to recognise and take advantage of rapidly changing market conditions and developments
- Identify and analyse significant trends in markets which provide timely information for the trading team
- Ensure the Trading team has up-to-date information and infrastructure to ensure decision making is informed, efficient and optimized
- Create and maintain sophisticated trading, forecasting and hedging models
- Undertake and perform complex analysis of products and strategies for trading decisions
- Communicate effectively across groups of different skill level and expertise to efficiently deliver the key messages for portfolio optimization

What you’ll bring to the table:

- Highly autonomous with the ability to take initiative, influence and drive results
- Strong Numerical and /IT skills
- High level of competence in leading modelling that utilises Excel, Python and SQL
- Creative/Imaginative skills - The ability to see linkages between apparently unrelated matters. Intellectual curiosity. Ability to develop and deploy new or unusual or creative approaches to problem solving. A desire for continual learning and development.
- Writing skills - Clear, concise, accuracy of grammar, punctuation, spelling. Wide vocabulary - but with the ability to use the simplest possible terms to convey the desired message
- Presentation skills:

- This role may be required to communicate in larger or public forum; however visual communication of complex concepts is required. (graphics, charts, effective PowerPoint skills)
- Minimum five years relevant experience within an energy or commodity trading company
- Strong analytical skills with experience of trading systems and portfolio valuation techniques
- Advanced MS Excel skills and ability to use VBA or other similar coding languages
- Proven ability to understand complex problems and design innovative solutions
- A tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline preferred (e.g. mathematics, engineering, statistic
