**Division Responsibilities**

The mission of the Office of Health Protection and Response (OHPR), in partnership with key

stakeholders, is to protect the health of the Australian community through effective

national leadership and coordination and building of appropriate capacity and capability to

detect, prevent and respond to threats to public health and safety. OHPR's objectives are to:

- Identify, analyse and prioritise health threats requiring national intervention.
- Prevent health threats through implementation of national strategies and effective

regulation.
- Support national health readiness through the development of plans, capacities and

capabilities.
- Co-ordinate health responses to emergencies and other threats.

**Branch Responsibilities**

The Communicable Diseases Branch is responsible for policy and program management

associated with the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable

disease threats posed to the Australian community.

This includes:

- Leading efforts to detect, address and respond to the threat of antimicrobial

resistance.
- Managing a range of projects and programs focusing on specific communicable

diseases and Debilitating Symptom Complexes Attributed to Ticks.
- Managing projects and programs related to the enhancement of public health

laboratory capacity and capability and mitigating threats posed by biological agents

of security concern.

**Section Responsibilities**

The Antimicrobial Resistance Policy (AMR) Section is responsible for implementation and

monitoring of the Australia's National Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy - 2020 and beyond

(the 2020 Strategy), which includes; developing options for a One Health AMR and

antimicrobial usage surveillance system that monitors and reports on AMR and usage across

human health, animal health, agriculture, food production and the environment sectors,

management of the Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Australia (AURA) Surveillance

System for human health, developing an AMR outbreak detection and response capability in

human health with states and territories, identifying strategic priority areas for research in

Australia and opportunities for collaboration at both the national and international level to

provide the best return on research investment and to reduce duplication, examining

funding mechanisms and economic models to incentivise the discovery of novel antibiotics

for human health and bring them to market in Australia, developing a monitoring and

evaluation framework and plan to monitor and evaluate success of the 2020 AMR strategy

and providing Secretariat support for Australian Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on

Antimicrobial Resistance (ASTAG) and the Antimicrobial Resistance Governance Group

(ARGG).

The Communicable Disease and Stakeholder Engagement Section is responsible for:
surveillance and support work for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), debilitation Symptoms

Complexes Attributed to Ticks (DSCATT) related policies, educational resources and

research, polio eradication and containment projects in collaboration with the World Health

Organisation, program management for mosquito surveillance and control and monitoring

and managing the supply of Rabies Immunoglobulin and Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG)

vaccine. The Section also manages the secretariat for the Communicable Diseases Network

Australia (an AHPPC standing committee), the National Tuberculosis Advisory Committee

and the National Arbovirus and Malaria Advisory Committee.

The Laboratories and Health Security Section (LHSS) is responsible for: providing national

leadership on policy development and strategic direction for enhancing Australian public

health laboratory
