About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
The Corporate Governance unit is responsible for establishing and administering corporate governance and governance committee structure, policy, procedures and reporting for fraud and corruption control to support the Commissioner as the Accountable Officer. The unit also manages QFES' obligations under relevant legislation, including the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (the Act) and other Queensland Government or Commonwealth policies for child safety to ensure they are being met.
Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for leading and managing the corporate governance and blue card teams within the appropriate financial and human resources delegations in establishing and administering corporate assurance activities, through developing, reviewing and monitoring systems, policies and procedures for governance committees, fraud control, and QFES governance framework, including assurance of QFES obligations under the Act to ensure best practice, compliance and improvement initiatives meet departmental requirements.

- Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in governance or business management.
- Knowledge and understanding of corporate governance principles, secretariat responsibilities, compliance, integrity and promoting a positive governance culture.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Lead and manage corporate assurance activities, governance management, fraud control and Working with Children (Blue card) obligations to ensure they meet whole-of-government and organisational objectives.
- Support planning and development, implementation and evaluation strategies designed to advance corporate governance and blue card compliance within QFES.
- Provide strategic advice and recommendations in relation to governance arrangements, compliance, opportunities, productivity, and responsiveness to emerging challenges, to promote best practice and influence decision making.
- Assist with overseeing the QFES governance framework to ensure accountability is maintained, including identifying improvements to ensure contemporary governance practices and legislative requirements meet departmental objectives.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and other areas of governance, risk and internal audit to promote best practice and delivery of services.
- Prepare and review high level reports, briefing papers and correspondence to support the delivery of governance processes and legislative requirements, in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Represent QFES at internal and external committees and forums pertaining to corporate governance functions and services to build awareness and meet agreed outcomes for QFES.
- Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team, fostering positive teamwork and assisting in the ongoing development of staff through performance, planning and review.
