The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
**What Will You Do?**
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. This role provides short-term case management support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved in Care & Protection and Family Law matters, assisting them to access essential services such as housing, Centrelink, medical care, and support programs, it involves close collaboration with internal team and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on culturally safe, community-focused, and ethical practice aligned with ALS values. You will:
- Support the setup and delivery of culturally safe wraparound services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across Sydney, Illawarra, and Southern NSW regions.
- Consult with local communities and organisations to improve service access and responsiveness.
- Conduct client needs assessment, risk assessments, and safety planning, including short-term assistance and advocacy.
- Prepare detailed reports and assessments, attend court or tribunals to support clients, and collaborate with solicitors.
- Promote client empowerment, especially for domestic violence survivors, through guidance and capacity-building.
- Maintain accurate records and adhere to ALS policies and code of conduct.
**Who Are We Looking For?**
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Identifies as and is recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, with strong cultural awareness and respect for community practices.
- Relevant qualification in Social Work or a related field, with demonstrated experience in social work, case management, or multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and communication skills, with the ability to maintain boundaries and manage diverse workloads independently.
- Computer literate, adaptable to new technologies, and capable of meeting deadlines under mínimal supervision.
- Hold a current NSW driver’s licence and is willing to travel intrastate, including carrying passengers.
- Desirable: Experience in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community organisations and multidisciplinary services.
