Brisbane, Australia APRA Full time

APRA’s mandate is to protect the Australian Community by establishing and enforcing prudential standards and practices designed to ensure that, under all reasonable circumstances, financial promises made by institutions we supervise are met within a stable, efficient and competitive financial system.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Manager to lead one of the New Banks and Payment Providers teams. Reporting to the Senior Manager, this role manages a team in prudential supervision and risk assessment of financial institutions to achieve the government’s and APRA’s objective of providing a prudentially sound financial system.

This team is responsible for the supervision of all new locally incorporated banks, providers of purchased payment facilities and special service providers.

Key challenges:

- Managing and developing staff who use a range of financial analysis and other supervisory skills to produce high-quality analysis and risk assessment.
- Modelling inclusive behaviours and instilling an open culture within the team, where divergent views are shared and respected.
- Identifying critical institutional and cohort developments that are likely to lead to serious problems and raising these as issues/concerns before they manifest.
- Maintaining an up to date and relevant knowledge of market issues that may impact on supervised financial institutions.
- Navigating the internal structure and business relationships of supervised financial institutions to focus on those areas that have the potential to lead to serious problems.
- Adapting the style and process of supervision depending on the supervised financial institution’s type, size, complexity, functions and risk.
- Assessing the quality of the supervised financial institution’s management, strategies, practices and systems.
- Matching resources against identified needs, given the large range of supervised financial institution’s types and activities.

Knowledge/experience requirements for effective performance:

- Knowledge and understanding of the APRA mission, objectives, functions, processes and systems.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation.
- Team management and leadership experience is preferred.
- Up to date with financial market trends and legislative environment.
- Good judgement of people, practice and situations to identify actual or potential problems in supervised financial institutions.
- Ability to engage with senior executives in supervised financial institutions to foster and achieve prudent practice.
- Excellent organisational, self and priority management skills.
- Strong financial analysis, investigative and research skills.
- Well-developed communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline.

APRA offers unprecedented exposure to the Financial Services industry. You will work amongst a team of highly skilled professionals, to positively influence industry best practice and the stability of the Australian financial system. Within this environment, you will have the opportunity to contribute your analytical expertise, as well as expanding your current skill set.
