**Assistant Parliamentary Counsel (Legal Officer, Grade VI)**

The Parliamentary Counsel’s Office (PCO) provides the Government with a comprehensive and integrated range of high-quality services for the drafting of, and access to, legislation and the giving of advice and information about legislation. As an Assistant Parliamentary Counsel, you will be engaged in the drafting of Bills, regulations, environmental planning instruments and other subordinate legislation, and associated legal work.
**This role is for you if you**:
- Are admitted or eligible for admission in Australia as an Australian legal practitioner and holding a practising certificate as a barrister or solicitor.
- Have a detailed knowledge of NSW law, constitutional law, and parliamentary and legislative processes.
- Have analytical and problem-solving skills, policy implementation skills, effective writing skills and an eye for detail.
**Key accountabilities**
- Undertake complex drafting projects (including preparing drafts of Bills and subordinate legislation and environmental planning instruments).
- Advise on the legality of proposed subordinate legislation and other instruments, including advice on the feasibility of legislative proposals and interpretation of legislation to assist clients and other staff in their requirements for legislation.
- Undertake detailed research and critical analysis for more senior drafters.
- Examine and comment on the drafts prepared within the Office as part of the Office’s quality control process
- Supervise other drafters by providing regular guidance, feedback and support and providing training and development opportunities.
- Assist with any office or drafting projects as required by the Parliamentary Counsel.

Please note that some afterhours work may be required, particularly around parliamentary sitting times. After hours work is managed within the rostering, flexible working, or paid overtime arrangements applicable to the team.
