**Position Overview**
The Assistant Director, Media and Information is a national Corporate Services role, providing professional media support for the Federal Court of Australia, the National Native Title Tribunal, Australian Competition Tribunal, the Copyright Tribunal of Australia, and the Defence Force Discipline Appeals Tribunal.
The position reports to the National Manager, Communications and works closely with the Executive Director Strategy and Corporate Services, Executive Director, People Culture and Communications, Chief Justice, judges, Native Title Registrar, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar, General Counsel and key staff. The position also liaises with external stakeholders including the media, legal profession, and other Court users.
**Duties**
- Manage incoming and outgoing communication with journalists nationally. Respond to media requests promptly and effectively using professional and sound judgment with an emphasis on transparency whilst operating within a legal framework.
- Manage media issues, in consultation with the Executive Director Strategy and Corporate Services, Executive Director People, Culture and Communications, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar, General Counsel, and the Native Title Registrar and Chief Justice, as appropriate.
- Provide guidance and advice on media issues, as well as educating appropriate officers and staff on effective media practices and processes.
- Advise on the establishment and maintenance of online files where appropriate and coordinate their management with chambers, web team and registry.
- In matters of high public interest, help coordinate the use of online files, remote access, delivery of judgments and broadcasting of hearings involving chambers, registry, web team, IT and media.
- Work with the communications team to develop digital content and work across communication channels to provide creative, innovative solutions to communicate complex and sensitive legal topics to a broad audience.
- Develop visual and multimedia communications to support written content.

**Professional qualifications and experience**
1. At least five years’ experience operating at a senior level in media and communication roles demonstrated through qualifications in journalism, public relations, marketing communication, and/or other relevant qualifications and experience, preferably within government or the law.

2. Excellent written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to research, write and edit materials for publication, such as media releases, opinion pieces, speeches, letters to the editor, and published articles.

3. Experience in implementing, planning and coordinating media strategies, in particular:

- the ability to develop strategic and innovative approaches to media relations
- to implement proactive public relations strategies, and
- the ability to exercise sound judgment and provide high-level advice to Court business areas on communication opportunities.

4. Well-developed management and organisational skills, including the ability to:

- manage multiple projects, and monitor workflows and standards to meet tight deadlines
- work autonomously and demonstrate resilience and leadership in a high-pressure environment, and
- exercise discretion on sensitive matters.

5. Extensive experience in developing productive working relationships, with internal and external stakeholders; liaising with and advising the Court’s executive and the highest levels of the judiciary; and working as a member of a professional team in a high-pressure environment.

6. Demonstrated ability to work with and form beneficial relationships with journalists from a wide range of media outlets, from senior legal reporters from national print media to television producers to regional radio presenters.

7. Maintain a professional approach and display sound judgment and discretion during events that may be critical and urgent in nature.
