Position Overview
Reporting to the Director Communications, the Assistant Director Strategic Design and Engagement, leads the development and implementation of brand strategy, visual identity, and stakeholder engagement initiatives that support the Courts' and Tribunal's strategic communications objectives.
This role requires a high level of creative execution, including the direct development of visual assets and design materials. The Assistant Director is responsible for shaping how the broader Listed Entity is perceived internally and externally, ensuring consistency, clarity, and alignment with corporate values and priorities.
Working closely with internal stakeholders, creative teams, and external partners, the role drives strategic brand positioning, produces and manages design outputs, and fosters strong relationships to enhance communication impact across the organisation.
Duties and responsibilities
- Design and produce visual assets, ensuring alignment with brand strategy and accessibility standards.
- Use design software to create high-quality visual communications, ensuring they meet strategic objectives and stakeholder expectations.
- Provide creative direction and quality assurance for graphic design outputs, including publications, infographics, social media content, presentations, and campaign materials.
- Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and external design suppliers to deliver timely and effective visual communications.
- Champion the integration of design thinking and user-centred design principles into communication planning and execution.
- Develop and implement a strategic brand framework, including visual identity, tone of voice, and brand guidelines.
- Oversee brand governance processes to ensure consistent application of visual identity across the organisation.
- Monitor brand performance and engagement metrics to inform continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with the broader Communications team to align visual storytelling with broader messaging and engagement strategies.
- Contribute to corporate reporting, strategic planning, and executive briefings as required.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated experience in brand strategy, graphic design, and stakeholder engagement within a complex organisation.
- Must have a strong portfolio showcasing design work and creative leadership.
- Advanced proficiency in design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite) and understanding of accessibility and inclusive design standards. This role requires daily use of design tools and active creation of visual content.
- Strong creative judgment and ability to translate strategic objectives into compelling visual communications.
- Proven ability to manage relationships and influence outcomes across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present and explain design concepts to non-design audiences.
- Experience working in or with government, including understanding of APS values and communication protocols, is highly desirable.
Mandatory or desirable qualifications
- Degree in visual communications or graphic design
- Preferably at least five years' experience working in a creative design agency or inhouse creative team.
Eligibility
Employment with the Court is subject to the conditions prescribed in the Public Service Act 1999, and the following:
- Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must hold Australian citizenship.
- Security and character clearance – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.
- Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
