The Spatial Analyst position is a new role located in the National Operations Support unit within the Hazard Preparedness and Response - National Team. Emergency management agencies rely on and use the spatial services for situational awareness and operational support, particularly during severe weather events. The primary purpose of the role is to develop and deliver spatial visualisation products, across a range of GIS platforms that integrate diverse data sets from the Australian Climate Service (ACS) partners to enable ACS customers to visualise and analyse hazard and impact information.

The National Operations Support unit is a multi-disciplinary team that leads engagement with the Emergency Management sector and delivers timely, professional, and trusted advice to reduce risk to the Australian community. The products and services integrate information from the Bureau of Meteorology and the Australian Climate Service partners and provide analysis, advice and insights into weather and climate, hydrology and geohazards, socio-economic context and possible social, economic and environmental impacts. The National Operations Support unit sits in the Hazard Preparedness and Response National Team within the Bureau of Meteorology Community Services Group (CSG).

The Australian Climate Service (ACS) supports better planning and preparedness for climate and natural hazards, and better response and recovery to disasters when they strike. Established by the Australian Government in 2021, the service's work is guided by recommendations in the Royal Commission on National Natural Disaster Arrangements. The service is a partnership, made up of world leading science, information and expertise from the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, CSIRO and Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This role will report to the Manager responsible for engagement with Emergency Management Australia and will support the development and delivery of high-quality customer focussed content. In this role, you will monitor the environment, weather and climate issues and generate information and analysis in visual form (maps, charts and info graphic displays) including past current and potential impacts and intelligence relating to customer decision to help develop and grow the Bureau’s new and emerging Australian Climate Service and Decision Support Services capability.

This role will involve working outside of standard business hours. The roster for the role will shared among team members and be adapted to meet customer needs. During extreme weather events, this position is expected to undertake extended working hours as directed.
