**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.

The Infrastructure Delivery Section is a key element of A&T and is responsible for the management, maintenance and engineering development of the built infrastructure at Australia’s Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations. The section consists of an expeditioner workforce that carries out construction activities at the Antarctic and sub Antarctic stations and, engineering and technical management group at the AAD’s head office in Kingston, Tasmania. It works closely with Infrastructure Strategy & Planning and Antarctic Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance teams to deliver and maintain all critical life support systems.

**The Job**
The Construction Lead will manage a team delivering major infrastructure works packages. This may be through direct supervision of Construction teams, Coordinators or working with a construction partner in ensuring the construction program is delivered safely and to the required technical specification. You will be part of a high performing project team and working closely with the Design & Commercial Leads with supervision and support of the Project Lead.
These projects include whole building structures through to essential services including power generation, water production and supply, wastewater treatment, station heating, accommodation and medical facilities. You may be required to travel to Antarctic or the Sub Antarctic to directly manage the works or operate as the owner’s superintendent.

**What we are looking for**
The successful applicant will have strong construction experience & leadership skills in construction project management and display attributes that are consistent with such position, be an excellent communicator and a collaborative team player. You will maintain a personal and practical commitment to the AAD’s WHS and environmental policies, setting the example and leading by your actions.

**Knowledge and experience**
- Recent site and project management experience relating to construction activities in the building or general construction industry overseeing the workload of a multi-disciplined trade group.
- Knowledge of the NCC, building construction, off site manufacturing and construction methodologies, ideally within cold climate environments.
- Knowledge of infrastructure services including electrical and water distribution, water treatment, heating, sewer and fire systems.
- Experience maintaining appropriate work site safety procedures, including sound knowledge of work health and safety standards.
- Current or very recent proficiency in risk assessments and job hazard analyses relating to building and construction works or maintenance.
- Sound experience with identification and purchase of materials associated with the building maintenance programs and construction of new works.
- Support and manage construction teams to effectively participate in document management systems.

**Skills and capabilities**
- Review and provide input to design for constructability.
- Produce detailed construction works plans to optimise resources and time on station including contribution to specification, scheduling and management of Infrastructure projects from conception through to handover.
- Manage each construction phase to ensure that project is delivered to agreed standards, on time and within allocated budgets
- Manage the construction process to ensure that project is compliant with the relevant environmental approvals and with any relevant legislation and policy requirements
- Develop scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers within a contractual framework.
- Responsible for the development of detailed cost plans for the delivery, construction, installation and commissioning of new and significant upgrades to Antarctic infrastructure.
