About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of role
The Hazard and Risk team leads the development and delivery of evidence based disaster risk information for Queensland through the integration of contemporary and internationally aligned risk methodologies. The team contributes to a range of activities associated with disaster management, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, working to reduce the current and future impacts of disasters on the community.
Reporting to the Manager, you will support disaster risk management activities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders across all levels of Queensland's Disaster Management Arrangements (QDMA). You will work as part of a team to profile disaster risk and impacts on communities, analyse information and provide advice to support the development and implementation of projects, programs, systems, tools and policy to help reduce the impacts of disasters on the community and state.

- Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in a relevant discipline e.g. disaster risk science, climate change, geospatial science, social science, emergency management or another related field.
Special requirements
- Capacity to support program delivery and emergency operations across the state, which may include work outside normal hours (e.g. nights and weekends) and regular travel to regional and remote locations.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Support and contribute to the design, development, delivery and evaluation of evidence-based and locally refined disaster risk management programs and activities across all levels of QDMA.
- Profile disaster risk and impacts on communities, analyse information from a range of sources, drawing logical and objective conclusions to provide advice for sustainable and risk-informed program delivery.
- Assist with the delivery and coordination of workshops, meetings, and other activities with internal and external stakeholders to enhance awareness and reduce the impact of disasters on the community.
- Support regional staff, disaster management groups and other key stakeholders by providing guidance on disaster risk assessment and management techniques and risk reduction priorities and actions.
- Assist with the preparation and review of briefing papers, submissions, reports and correspondence in accordance with organisational requirements.
- Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are met and business objectives are achieved.
- Contribute to project deliverables, monitoring and evaluating outcomes against performance targets to effectively support the development of risk based planning and policy across all levels of QDMA.
- Undertake and support operational duties during emergencies and disasters and work within a dynamic environment, fostering teamwork and actively participate in performance and development programs.
