The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch**:
Architecture, Design and Security Branch is located within the CIO’s remit and is responsible for setting the strategic technology direction for the Department, enabling alignment between technology strategies and business needs. The Branch works closely with the business to provide guidance and support to architecture design, delivery and sustainment decisions.
**About the role**:
This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an evolving, influencing and dynamic Branch with reach beyond our Department. The Business Manager will provide high-level support, advice and briefing material for the Assistant Secretary (AS) of Architecture, Design and Security (ADS). It is a position of trust that requires sound judgement and exemplary levels of personal integrity, sensitivity, confidentiality and discretion. It is integral that the position holder has exemplary stakeholder engagement, relationship management and communication skills, both written and verbal and has demonstrated high level of organisational skills. You will join an energetic leadership team to guide the A&I Branch into the future.
**Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Provide strategic and operational support to the Assistant Secretary of ADS Branch on a wide range of issues affecting the Portfolio, the Department and the Australian Border Force
- Coordinate and/or prepare correspondence, corporate documentation, submissions, briefings, tasking, talking points and other strategic documentation
- Provide a quality assurance function of Branch products being submitted to the AS, including ministerial and parliamentary responsibilities, communication and media requests, Branch reporting, business planning and various requests for information
- Work with the Branch Leadership Team, completing and providing analysis and forecasting of the Branch’s workforce requirements
- Take a key role in planning and service development activity including: annual business plans and initiatives as part of the strategic plan; new services, projects and capital developments
- Lead, coordinate and deliver urgent or high level tasking that span across the Branch or the Division more broadly.
**Role requirements/qualifications**:
- Knowledge of and experience in portfolio operations and/or Australian Public Service work flows and processes
- Ability to quickly understand AS and Branch needs, identify gaps, and assist with fulfilling them or recommend effective solutions
- Sound understanding or ability to quickly obtain an understanding of departmental processes, governance and policies
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong team work and interpersonal skills
- Strong organisation skills
- Ability to proactively achieve outcomes for the team and the Branch.
