**GENERAL MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION**

**Position Title**: General Manager

**Responsible to**: Newtown School of Arts Trust (5 Eliza)

**Reports to**: Executive Manager and Chair

**Classification**: Part time (16hr/wk)

**The Opportunity**:

- Key leadership role for a skilled professional who is an enthusiastic go-getter, able to multi-task, take initiative and complete projects autonomously
- Ongoing part-time opportunity to support a small but dynamic and growing not-for-profit organisation in arts, culture and the creative sector
- Primarily based in the Inner West, with the ability to complete some work remotely with some flexible hours.

**About the Organisation**

The Newtown School of Arts, also known as ‘5 Eliza’, is an original social enterprise with a history commencing in 1899. 5 Eliza operates as a small independent, non-commercialized, not-for-profit entity housed in a heritage building. 5 Eliza works to foster artistic enterprise by providing affordable, cultural infrastructure without the need for government subsidy. The building currently houses four visual-artist studios, flexible incubator spaces and a heritage Ballroom Theatre. The organisation has been developing a comprehensive plan for the adaptive redesign, and expansion of the building and its business model. The plan seeks to double the existing floor plan, quadruple cultural output and support of creative workers, and make the heritage building widely accessible to all.

**Role Summary**

**Position Description and Key Responsibilities**
- Business Development (20%)_
- Identify and secure funding opportunities for existing programs and to develop new programs. Grant writing, grant management and acquittals to Government at all levels and philanthropic foundations
- Implement daily operations aligned with the 5 Eliza's short and long-term business goals and strategies
- Analyse internal operations, identify areas of process enhancement and implement new procedures to progress and deliver on outcomes
- Financial Management (20%)_
- Prepare, maintain, and monitor annual and multi-year organisational budgets with effective account structures, and regularly report on organisational performance against approved budgets.
- Maintain the financial health and integrity of the organisation by ensuring all accounts payable and receivable records are correctly categorised and reconciled in Xero, Business Banking Online payments are uploaded for authorisations, petty cash/debit cards use is monitored, gifts/donations are monitored and accounted for per DGR requirements and utility costs are correctly charged back to tenants (including increases).
- Liaise with the bookkeeper and registered BAS agent on BAS statements and GST reports
- Building Management (15%)_
- Perform building and caretaking responsibilities including management of building compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and procedures
- Plan and manage on-site work with designated contractors including plumbers, electricians, gardeners, roofers, remedial contractors including calls for tender and contractor vetting.
- Act as first point of contact for all building tenants (currently four visual artists and one theatrical producer group).
- Provide input around building upgrade works and projects to Board.
- Office Administration (15%)_
- Updating and maintaining all business records
- Drive the effective publication and updating of the website, social media, media releases and other communications priorities
- Human Resources (10%)_
- Manage recruitment, position descriptions, contracts, and induction
- Maintain the currency of all insurances and any workers’ compensation obligations
- Supervise the placement and management of interns and facilitate their projects and workflows
- Industry Engagement (10%)_
- Build and maintain strong relationships across our diverse range of stakeholders including the arts, business, government and philanthropy sectors; neighbours and civic bodies.
- Governance (10%)_
- Support the Company Secretaries to ensure 5 Eliza maintains ASIC and ACNC compliance and legal obligations
- Maintain all ROCO obligations, including timely reporting of donations
- Maintain the currency of all insurances and any workers’ compensation obligations
- Attend 1 Board meeting a month and action, or oversee delegated actions, arising from meetings.

**Essential Selection Criteria**
- A self-starter with the ability to take responsibility and take charge.
- Willing and able to exercise judgement, make decisions in order to problem solve and secure outcomes,
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, with the ability to be a team player and team leader
- Outstanding relationship management skills to build and maintain relationships with Board members, existing and potential donors, partnering organisations, consultants, customers, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
