The Mental Health Review Tribunal (Tribunal) is an independent government body operating in accordance with the Mental Health Act 2016 (Qld). The Tribunal's primary purpose is to review the involuntary status of persons with a mental illness and/or intellectual disability. Further information regarding the Tribunal can be found here.
The Position
Reporting to the President for administrative matters, the Legal Member will be appointed on a full-time basis for a term of up to three years. The successful applicant will assist the President and Deputy President in leading, supporting, implementing and sustaining the Tribunal's operations across Queensland.
In addition, the Legal Member must have the necessary knowledge and expertise to be appointed as a President's delegate pursuant to section 772 of the Mental Health Act 2016 and to exercise the functions, powers and duties in accordance with the Instrument of Delegation.
Eligibility
A person is eligible for appointment as a Legal Member of the Tribunal if:
they are a lawyer of at least five (5) years standing. That is, you must be admitted to the legal profession in Australia for a minimum of five (5) years.
the Minister is satisfied that they possess the competencies developed by the President under section 714(3) of the Mental Health Act 2016.
People from a diverse range of backgrounds, including Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, are encouraged to apply.
Travel
This position will require travel within Queensland and as otherwise required, within Australia for Tribunal matters, and Tribunal associated business.
It is expected that travel throughout Queensland will be undertaken on a regular basis.
