Assistant Technical Director- Events/festivals

The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) collaborates with the production team to support & advance the technical components. The ATD is highly proficient at working with scenic shops for the RFP process, oversee builds, and leading onsite crews. The ATD has a strong understanding of scenic fabrication & other production elements, including - scenery, rigging, lighting, audio, video, and 3D design. Must be able to be on site for projects in Saudi Arabia or Qatar for duration for 4-12 weeks (depending on project)
**Responsibilities**:
- Work under the direction of a technical director / technical producer to support project needs
- Attend initial meetings & site surveys
- Draft in Vectorworks (2D & 3D) & manage show drawing files— preferable, but not a firm requirement.
- Site plans, ground plans, and other required layouts
- Individual custom scenic elements for fabrication vendors/ shops & client communication
- Manage drawings & submit them to the shop
- Work under the guidance of the Technical Director to prepare orders & purchasing (e.g. scenery, print graphics, etc.)
- Manage vendor relationships & budgets - quoting elements to production partners
- Oversee labor schedule, budget, and crews of local labor
- Lead installs onsite to ensure the build is performed as specified
- Research special projects as needed
- Enforce safety standards, follow policies & procedures, and make recommendations as necessary
- Detail-oriented & comfortable measurements (measure twice, cut once)
- Comfortable working in an office setting, as well as from more rigorous & non-traditional onsite environments
- Have excellent interpersonal & communication skills, both verbal & written. They will communicate primarily with vendors, staff, and crew
- Have outstanding organizational skills & great attention to detail
- Take initiative, act responsively, and demonstrate a sense of urgency
- Comfortable multi-tasking & working graciously in a fast-paced environment
- Work with discretion, diplomacy, and tact across a multitude of work settings, including “buttoned-up” environments, such as financial & government agencies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of 2 years of live event, entertainment, theater, touring concert and/or production experience in scenic or exhibit fabrication
- Preferable to have 3D drafting skills in Vectorworks (knowledge in programs like Rhino, SketchUp, AutoCAD, etc is a plus)
- Proficient understanding of scenic fabrication
