The Claims Assessment Branch (CABRA) is primarily responsible for:

- delivering decisions on liability for claims lodged under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA), including those where veterans have service that is covered by the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation (Defence-related Claims) Act 1988 (DRCA) and/or the Veterans Entitlement Act 1986 (VEA).
- facilitating information exchange with Defence through the Single Access Mechanism (SAM) function to enable claims processing nationally.

CABRA operates in a client-focused environment, often dealing with sensitive medical, financial, and other information. The Branch is respectful and empathetic to the unique and changing needs of the veteran community and is committed to providing quality outcomes for all internal and external stakeholders. It’s a dynamic environment, with a high level of sensitivity and media interest.

**Duties**
- Provide high quality services including evidence based individual support to staff within the selected State DVA offices in response to workplace stressors
- Support staff when having to conduct difficult conversations and interactions with clients and representatives
- Run skills development sessions in both individual and small groups including, but not limited to:

- Assisting staff to manage stress and anxiety
- Managing difficult clients interactions
- Assisting staff to respond to clients with mental health impairments
- Resilience building
- Participate in program evaluation and research activities, contributing to project management activities that implement strategic direction and quality improvement recommendations, and provide feedback for ongoing development of policies and procedures
- Develop and maintain effective communication and strong working relationships with a variety of business groups within the office and the wider DVA
- Collect and catalogue quantitative and qualitative data in order to evaluate trends, effectiveness of supports provided and external support referrals
- Participate in, and contribute to, ongoing learning and development activities and maintenance of professional status

**Eligibility**
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
- All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
- Qualified Social Worker with eligibility to obtain membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
