We now have a permanent full time role for a qualified Political Editor based in Canberra.

The Political Editor is responsible for providing high quality analysis, and a sophisticated overview of the political landscape - placing political events and the workings of Parliament into a broad context for audiences.

**Responsibilities will include**:
Ensuring a high level of authoritative, accurate, engaging and fair political journalism.
Creation of quality, newsworthy stories and creative treatments, with a strong focus on breaking stories and leading the news agenda
Leverage of relationships with key political figures to ensure the widest range of information and understanding as possible.
Analysis of information obtained against the general background of current developments in order to assess its relative value and importance.
Translation of complex material into its most simple, appropriate form and tailor it for the relevant audience in an engaging manner.
Ensuring up to date knowledge of ongoing political situations.
Writing and producing finely-crafted, imaginative packages, reports and items.
Reporting, live or pre-recorded, giving accurate updates and analysis while events develop.
Supporting political news across Paramount ANZ’s digital platforms through various emerging technologies, including blogging and social media.
Future planning to ensure awareness of potential political developments and trends.

What are we looking for in our Political Editor? What's important?

One of the foremost political authorities in Australia.
Experience in live broadcasting.
Outstanding and exceptional knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Australian politics.
Good contacts with political figures and organisations.
Experience in interviewing and reporting, preparing and voicing packages for broadcast.
A highly developed and authoritative news and current affairs judgement.
Knowledge and practical experience of weekly and/or daily journalism.
Ability to make major decisions under pressure and to identify, prioritise and interpret key stories of the day.
Ability to originate and generate story ideas.
Ability to build relationships/rapport with a variety of key people - from senior politicians to camera operators - and influence them where necessary.
Ability to negotiate/exercise diplomacy with people where necessary.
Proven writing, editing, interviewing, reporting and presenting skills
Highly developed communication skills.
Ability to motivate and develop editorial staff to make innovative and imaginative programmes.
