**About the School Workforce Directorate**

The School Workforce Directorate develops and implements initiatives to support school workforce strategy and planning and leads the delivery of attraction and engagement programs for teachers. It manages the recruitment and placement process for all NSW Public Schools and oversees the department’s relationship with initial teacher education providers and National Education Standards Authority. The Directorate is committed to delivering the Plan for NSW Public Education.

**About the team**

The Workforce Modelling team plays a critical role in supporting strategic decision-making across the Department by delivering high-quality, data-driven analysis of current and future workforce needs. Using statistics and data analytics, the team works closely with business units to inform resourcing strategies, identify emerging trends, and optimise the allocation of staff to meet the evolving needs of schools and students across New South Wales.

The team is committed to building robust evidence bases that support fair, efficient, and transparent workforce planning. Operating in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, the Workforce Modelling team ensures that insights are accessible, actionable, and aligned with broader departmental goals. The team’s work has a direct impact on how the Department plans for growth, responds to change, and delivers high-quality education outcomes across the public system.

**About the role**

This role involves sourcing, preparing, analysing, and interpreting large and complex datasets using programming and statistical tools (Python or R, and SQL) to deliver evidence-based insights aligned with departmental priorities. The Analyst will work collaboratively across business units to inform workforce resourcing, monitor trends, and support planning activities that underpin high-quality education delivery across NSW public schools.

For further information please view the **role description**.
- At least have 3 years of experience as a data analyst, statistician, or similar role.
- Demonstrate experience preparing datasets for analysis and modelling; including sourcing, cleaning, and compiling complex datasets from multiple systems and formats.
- Demonstrate experience conducting data analytics and statistical modelling.
- Demonstrate experience communicating complex analysis to technical and non-technical audiences via written documents, visualisations, and using other tools such as Power BI or Plotly with Markdown.
- Have strong coding capabilities with either Python or R (we are primarily a Python-based team), be familiar with SQL and with version control tools such as BitBucket and have extensive experience preparing and maintaining technical documentation.
- Take initiative and demonstrate strong project coordination skills, including the ability to scope analytical work, work collaboratively across teams, and deliver results within agreed timeframes.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge and hands-on experience in researching and analysing education-related datasets, with the ability to distil key findings into actionable policy or operational insights.

**Key challenges**
- Managing and analysing large, complex and often incomplete datasets across disparate systems.
- Communicating technical findings to stakeholders with varying levels of data literacy in a meaningful and accessible manner.
- Balancing competing priorities and timeframes while delivering high-quality analytical outputs within a dynamic policy and operational context.

**Essential requirements of the role**
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. data science, statistics, economics, computer science, mathematics, public policy) and demonstrated equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.

**Key knowledge and experience**
- Proven experience using modern data analytics and modelling tools (such as Python, SQL, R, Power BI, Tableau, or similar) to interrogate large datasets, identify patterns, and generate insights.
- Experience translating complex findings into clear narratives through data storytelling, visualisation, or briefing materials for non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with data governance, data ethics, and responsible use of data in public sector contexts.
- Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.
