**Who we are**:
We are the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. We lead Australia’s response to climate change and sustainable energy use, and help protect our environment, heritage, and water. We provide advice to the Australian Government around climate, energy, and the environment, and administer legislation. The department also enforce laws relating to the protection of the environment and biodiversity, wildlife, fuel quality and greenhouse gas storage.
We deliver policies and programs to:
- help address climate change and build a more innovative, future ready energy system,
- help protect, restore, and manage Australia’s land and ocean environment and heritage,
- improve the health of our rivers and freshwater ecosystems and manage Australia’s water resources for industry and regional communities.
- advance Australia’s interests in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.
**About the Branch**
The People Strategy, Safety and Wellbeing Branch (PSSW Branch) works alongside the Capability and Employment Branch to implement and execute contemporary strategic and operational Human Resource (HR) functions related to safety and wellbeing, integrity, strategy, culture and change, and strategic people partnering for Parks and the Australian Antarctic Division.
The PSSW Branch plays an integral role in advising on and shaping the department’s HR strategies and services and delivering key priorities for the department to support the delivery of the Corporate Plan and keep our people safe. The Branch currently supports the following teams:
- Health, Safety and Wellbeing - Strategy and Systems
- Health, Safety and Wellbeing - Operations
- People Strategy, Culture and Change
- Integrity
- Parks - Strategic People Partner
- AAD - Strategic People Partner
**About the role**
As the Branch Head of People Strategy, Safety and Wellbeing Branch you will be responsible for providing strategic HR, including WHS advice, to stakeholders operating in unique and complex environments, particularly those in Parks Australia and Australian Antarctic Division. The Branch is responsible for:
Your duties include but are not limited to:
- Development and maintenance of the Department WHS Management System, WHS Strategic direction and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Providing high level advice and support to Senior Executive and the department to ensure WHS obligations are met, including complying with Work, Health and Safety and other relevant legislation
- Delivering the overarching People Strategy, development of the Employee Value Proposition and Change Management Function, as well as co-ordinating the APS Reform agenda across the department
- Providing support to embedded Strategic People Partner teams in Parks Australia Division (PAD) and Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), having a strong understanding of the areas of work, relevant HR and WHS legislation, or the ability to quickly develop this understanding,
- Engaging with key external and departmental committees, forums, and meetings and form productive working relationships with key internal stakeholders
- Review and embed Integrity processes and procedures across the Department and ensure these are well understood.
- Promoting integrity practices by displaying a high level of ethical behaviour in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, APS Values and APS Employment Principles.
- Leading in a manner the consistent with the Secretaries Charter of Leadership Behaviours (be Dynamic, be Respectful, have Integrity, Value others and Empower people).
- Will have a demonstrated ability to provide leadership to your team, and actively build effective, robust, and collaborative relationships with stakeholders to lead and deliver on the department’s objectives.

- has had experience with managing remote operational teams, is adaptable to change, possesses excellent people management skills, and is able to problem solve.
- are able to develop, monitor and execute project plans and organise teams to achieve ambitious targets and deliverables.
- are highly motivated and have an agile approach that enables you to anticipate opportunities, push knowledge boundaries, encourage creativity and innovative ideas,
- will have experience or relevant understanding of Commonwealth government including liaison with central agencies, budget, and government processes, with a track record in successful policy, strategy, and budget initiatives, and
- the ability to focus on the needs of the branch and department, exercising sound judgement while understanding governance requirements and aligning the department’s strategies with government priorities.
