**The Role**
The Assistant Director (AD) Unilateral Training (ULT) manages a team of ADF, APS and Reserve personnel within the Directorate of Operations and Training Area Management (DOTAM).
This role is responsible to act as the coordination lead for the Australian Department of Defence in the planning and execution of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Unilateral Training (ULT) Exercise (EX WALLABY) under the Australia Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) (Treaty) and associated implementing arrangements and manage Singapore Police Force - Gurkha (SPFGC) training in Australia.
The AD ULT is required to demonstrate ability to plan complex military exercises with the SAF and SPFGC to enable effective training outcomes on the Australian training area estate while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental policies in accordance with Australian Department of Defence requirements.
The AD ULT is required to demonstrate an understanding of the Defence training area estate and policies, including range capabilities, weapons and munitions requirements, Training Area Standing Orders and relevant policies and principles in relation to foreign force training area and range usage.
The successful applicant needs to demonstrate good cultural awareness, and be able to work in a culturally diverse environment with SAF and SPFGC. Although this is an Australian Department of Defence position it is fully funded by the Singapore Government.
This is a diverse role integral in the coordination and management of:
- ADF support to SAF ULT exercises, planning, meetings, working groups, events and visits,
- Security, media and public consultation prior, during and after exercises,
- The DOTAM ULT team responsible for the delivery of administration, service and advice relevant to the exercises,
- Preparation and submission of complex correspondence including Planning Conference outcomes, after action reports Treaty development, MOUs, and MOAs and the management of Special Public Monies (SPM) accounts on behalf of both Singapore and Australia.
- Interpret and deliver advice on Defence Instructions, Regulations and Acts for weapon platforms, munitions and explosives employed by foreign forces,
- The development and maintenance of relationships with a variety of stakeholders including Defence organisations, Commonwealth /State government agencies, local City /Shire Councils and relevant non-government agencies involved.
This position manages a large budget managed between Australian and Singaporean Defence forces through the SPM reporting process.
This position undertakes frequent domestic travel to Military Training Areas across the country and occasionally international travel to Singapore.
The position is based in Brisbane and the successful applicant is preferred to be located at Enoggera Barracks

The Directorate of Operations and Training Area Management (DOTAM) is an exciting place to work with very broad responsibilities providing opportunities for career progression and travel.

- The operation and management of 39 military Training Areas and Ranges across Australia,
- Delivery of Bushfire Mitigation activities across the entire Defence Estate, and
- The coordination of the Security & Estate Group support to major military exercises and facilitation of Defence domestic operations within Australia. This includes the full range of Joint Operations Support Staff (JOSS) services comprising the coordination of Defence Assistance to the Civil Community, Defence Force Aid to the Civil Authority and ceremonial requests.
The Directorate works closely with the Services, aiming to provide quality military exercise areas and facilities to ensure Defence and partnered countries can operate safely on modern and sustainable training areas.
The development of these areas ultimately ensures forces can enhance Defence capability and readiness, helping protect our nation.
DOTAM HQ is currently based in Campbell Park Canberra and the team works in an integrated (civilian and military) environment. The organisation consists of a team of approximately 220 Defence personnel (ADF, APS, Reserve) plus contracted personnel located nationally across five regions.
