Biosecurity Specialist

As a Biosecurity Specialist, you will play a vital role in safeguarding our agricultural industries from potential threats.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Perform screenings, inspections, and assurance activities associated with international aircraft, air and sea passengers/crew, and international mail to ensure compliance with Australia's biosecurity requirements.
  • Verify documentation to confirm adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Manage goods that fail to meet import requirements, capturing relevant information to inform evidence-based decisions.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice on biosecurity matters to stakeholders, clients, and senior managers.
  • Identify trends in biosecurity risks and escalate them to inform targeted intelligence and risk-based activities.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental standards of behavior, including the APS Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Promote and adhere to departmental WHS and Rehabilitation policies and guidelines, reporting risks to local management and WHS as needed.
  • Offer coaching and support to colleagues on biosecurity matters.

Requirements:

  • Holding a valid Australian motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Ability to work in both outdoor and office-based environments.
  • Wearing an official uniform supplied by the department during field operations.
  • Adhering to departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Satisfactorily completing the department's Biosecurity Foundation Program and meeting minimum requirements for appointment as a Biosecurity Officer under the Biosecurity Act 2015.
