Research Opportunity Overview

This PhD program focuses on using cutting-edge technology to assess the functional brain response of preterm infants. The project involves the use of state-of-the-art multi-channel near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to detect socio-cognitive disorders early in preterm infants. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Monash Newborn and the Ritchie Centre at The Hudson Institute of Medical Research.

Research Objectives

  • To investigate the correlations between neurovascular physiology, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental assessments in preterm infants.
  • To develop and apply novel NIRS-based methods for early detection of socio-cognitive disorders in preterm infants.

Requirements and Eligibility

Candidates will need to meet the Monash University minimum requirements for admission to a PhD. A strong background in clinical neonatology or follow-up of high-risk infants is desirable. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort of clinicians and researchers based at Monash Newborn and Department of Paediatrics.

Supervisory Team

The principal supervisor will be Associate Professor Flora Wong, a consultant neonatologist and clinician-scientist with research expertise in neonatal brain development, brain injury, and neuroprotection. Co-supervisors will include Dr Robin Laycock, a vision neuroscientist at RMIT University, and other experts depending on the project focus.
