Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

SpaceX is actively developing technologies to make human life on Mars possible. We are seeking a mechanical engineer to join our team of hardware owners responsible for designing and building flight hardware such as propellant tanks, integration interfaces, primary structures, and structural subassemblies.

As a mechanical engineer at SpaceX, you will be empowered to make real-time decisions, solve complex problems, and own end-to-end processes. You will be working alongside a world-class production team and be hands-on from day one.

Responsibilities include:

">
  • ">
  • Developing design concepts from a clean sheet and sizing vehicle structures based on flight loads">
  • Collaborating with peers from different vehicle systems to develop designs that balance mass, cost, and capability">
  • Creating detailed designs to implement structural concepts and generating CAD models in NX for components, assemblies, and vehicle integration">
  • Building finite element models to assess designs in detail and analyze structures to prove they meet the needs of the vehicle">
  • Applying first-order hand calculations and empirical formulas to assess and iterate on designs rapidly">
  • Validating designs by building development articles to test individual joints and design elements for strength">
  • Performing structural testing on subassemblies and full sections of the airframe">
  • Partnering with build engineers and technicians to improve designs">
  • Supporting the assembly of hardware in the factory, witnessing designs being brought to life daily, and watching them take flight and make history">

Basics Qualifications

">

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience with mechanical design and analysis. Competition team or internship experience qualifies.

Preferred Skills and Experience

">

The preferred candidate will have experience designing, analyzing, building, and testing high-performance mechanical systems. They should also have experience working within interdisciplinary teams to develop solutions to challenging and complex problems.

Additionally, the candidate should have experience with FEA or multiphysics simulation packages (e.g. NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS), experience designing and executing qualification testing, and a strong understanding of mechanical first principles and structural analysis methodologies.

">

They should also be proficient in selecting materials and manufacturing methods for mechanical components and have analytical/scientific programming experience (i.e. Python, Matlab, Excel).
