About the Role

The Electronic Warfare Specialist plays a critical role in the Navy's war-fighting team, identifying and defending against anti-ship missiles. This specialized role requires intimate knowledge of ships, aircraft, and their associated weapons and radars.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and defend against anti-ship missiles
  • Gain and maintain a higher level security clearance
  • Complete demanding training in technical analysis and equipment usage
  • Present information clearly and concisely to those in command

Job On Base

When not deployed, Electronic Warfare Specialists work in the Naval Operations Support Unit at Devonport Naval Base in Auckland. They may also be required to take up positions in the Defence Headquarters or Joint Forces Headquarters, or the Joint Electronic Warfare Support Facility in the Wellington region.

Job On Deployment

At sea, Electronic Warfare Specialists primarily work in Defence Watches intercepting radar emissions and identifying potential threats. They provide the ship with early warning and situational awareness, enabling the Command Team to make informed decisions.

Career Progression and Training

Electronic Warfare Specialists undergo 16 weeks of basic military training, followed by 16 weeks of training at the Maritime Electronic Warfare School. They will also complete damage control training, seamanship, and sea survival training.

Entry Requirements

To become an Electronic Warfare Specialist, you must be 18 years old, a New Zealand citizen for at least 10 years, and meet the minimum entry fitness standards. You will also need to pass a full psychological assessment and complete a 10-year background history check.
