About the Role

As a Combat System Specialist with the New Zealand Defence Force, you will play a critical role in the operation of military radars and sonars to detect and track surface ships, submarines, and aircraft. You will work in a team environment to build a comprehensive picture of the environment surrounding a warship, using advanced military radar and information systems. Your duties will include locating, tracking, and classifying surface ships, submarines, and aircraft to inform action, whether it be to intercept pirates or drug smugglers, conduct a search and rescue, or engage in anti-submarine warfare.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate military radars and sonars to detect and track surface ships, submarines, and aircraft
  • Work in a team environment to build a comprehensive picture of the environment surrounding a warship
  • Locate, track, and classify surface ships, submarines, and aircraft to inform action
  • Operate remotely controlled weapons systems to defend and defeat the enemy
  • Direct Maritime Helicopters in tasks such as Search and Rescue or anti-submarine warfare

Career Progression and Training

As a Combat System Specialist, you will have the opportunity to progress through various training courses and specialisations, including the Able Combat Systems Specialist (ACSS) Phase One and Two courses. You will also have the opportunity to work on shore-based simulators and at sea on RNZN ships, refining your skills and knowledge in a real-world environment.
