Salary: (Level 4) $78,584 - $82,000 + superannuation
(Level 5) $85,000 + superannuation

Role Significance:
The Technical Support Group (TSG) within the School of Engineering and Technology at UNSW Canberra is seeking a Technical Officer (Mechanical). This role is crucial for providing technical leadership across the School and Faculty, ensuring that graduates are equipped to tackle complex engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
The Technical Officer (Mechanical) will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the development, upkeep, and efficient management of teaching and research equipment in the Mechanical Workshop and associated laboratories.
  • Collaborating with academic staff and students to enhance educational outcomes and support undergraduate teaching.
  • Ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations.
  • Utilizing both trade and laboratory skills to meet the demands of the role.

Reporting Structure:
This position reports to the Task Supervisor Scheduler and may involve collaboration with other academic or professional staff as directed.

Accountabilities:
As a Level 4 Technical Officer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Executing design, manufacturing, and repair tasks for mechanical systems based on provided specifications.
  • Maintaining teaching and research facilities and assisting in the development of necessary components.
  • Building strong relationships with colleagues, students, and stakeholders to develop engineering solutions.
  • Contributing to the delivery and assessment of undergraduate laboratory classes.

As a Level 5 Technical Officer, you will also:

  • Operate and maintain advanced manufacturing technologies and software for mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Engage in design and fabrication of teaching and research components.

Qualifications and Skills:
For Level 4, candidates should possess:

  • A trade certificate in Fitting and Machining or relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Proficiency in traditional and digital manufacturing technologies, including Computer Aided Machining (CAM).
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

For Level 5, additional qualifications include:

  • Experience with Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machining and Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates must undergo pre-employment checks as part of the hiring process. Full Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship is required, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
