Job Summary:

This is a senior-level position that requires a highly skilled and experienced Lighting Technical Director to join our team at Industrial Light & Magic. As a key member of our Visual Effects department, you will be responsible for producing high-quality lighting and rendering for complex shots in high-end photo-realistic visual effects films.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Lighting Team, Supervisors, and other key creatives to achieve the highest quality work.
  • Design and create lighting and look development for computer-generated objects and scenes.
  • Responsible for the final CG scene assembly, lighting, and rendering of very complex shots.
  • Work closely with Supervisors and other team members to determine the best approach to solving CG challenges and developing the final look.
  • Develop and maintain efficient rendering set-ups to optimize render farm usage.
  • Ensure timely completion of tasks while maintaining the highest level of work quality.
  • Communicate effectively with the Production team and Lighting team regarding schedules and deadlines.
  • Mentor and guide junior artists within the Lighting/Look Development team.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Graphics or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Experience in real-world lighting and photography.
  • Demonstrable advanced Lighting and Rendering experience within a VFX environment.
  • Previous experience in Look Development tasks.

  • Prior leadership experience.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Excellent aesthetic eye and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to teach and mentor junior artists.
  • Strong prioritization and time management skills.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in writing plug-ins, set-up sequences, and debugging simulations.
  • Strong compositing skills and knowledge of Nuke.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and software quickly.
Technical Skills:
  • Excellent knowledge of Renderman and/or other unbiased rendering systems.
  • Knowledge of Katana, Maya, and/or Zeno is beneficial.
  • Strong knowledge of lighting techniques and color-space.
  • Basic knowledge of physically plausible shading techniques.
  • Good knowledge of other disciplines within VFX, including simulation, modeling, and UV mapping.
  • Understanding of Python and/or MEL scripting.
  • Good knowledge of Linux-based operating systems.
