The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is seeking an experienced Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of our production laboratory. This is a highly rewarding role for those who thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled and organized individual to manage our laboratory staff, ensure compliance with quality standards, and maintain accurate records of experiments and results. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in a research or production laboratory, expert knowledge of process improvement, and excellent communication skills.

Salary and Benefits

This is a one-year term contract with the possibility of extension. The salary range is up to $96,500 + 11.5% superannuation + salary packaging (depending on experience). We offer a generous benefits package, including ample opportunities for ongoing training and development, flexible work arrangements, 18 weeks paid parental leave, and a range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise laboratory staff, including recruitment, training programs, project allocation, and performance reviews.
  • Oversee the operation and administration of the laboratory, ensuring service quality is maintained.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures, ensuring they are current and reflective of work performed.
  • Manage and control stock, equipment, and services to the laboratory, including purchasing, repair, and maintenance.
  • Communicate and review laboratory performance, monitoring key indicators such as turnaround time, quality metrics, and client interactions.
  • Contribute to team and Garvan research projects.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in a research or production laboratory.
  • Expert knowledge of process improvement or experimental design.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to cost and budget a process.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a diverse, multicultural environment.
