Ensuring the Safety and Well-being of Victims: A Key Role

The Witness Assistance Service (WAS) plays a pivotal part in mitigating the stress and risk of potential re-traumatisation for victims of crime, their families, and vulnerable witnesses involved in matters prosecuted by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution's (CDPP).

We support a diverse range of victims/witnesses, including those involved in prosecutions relating to online child sexual exploitation, people trafficking, and work health and safety offences.

Majority of matters referred to the WAS involve children/young and online child sexual exploitation offences, necessitating extensive communication with parents and caregivers.

The role of the Witness Assistance Officer (WAO) is to provide prosecution-related information and support to victims of crime and vulnerable witnesses, ensuring the Office meets its legal and policy obligations.

Vulnerable persons can be located across Australia and overseas, requiring efficient communication via telephone, in writing, and virtual platforms such as Microsoft Teams.

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field
