Role Summary:
The Witness Assistance Service (WAS) is a specialist unit within the Director of Public Prosecutions Office, working as part of the prosecution team to assist and support victims of crime and vulnerable witnesses through the criminal justice process.
This role focuses on providing specialist services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander witnesses and victims of crime and their families who are involved in serious matters prosecuted by the Director of Public Prosecutions Office.
- To enhance access to Witness Assistance Services and engage with local Indigenous communities and service providers;
- To minimise stress and potential re-traumatisation for victims and witnesses related to involvement in the criminal justice system;
- To assist the prosecution by ensuring witnesses have the opportunity to give their evidence to the best of their ability;
- To assist the Office in meeting its obligations under the NSW Charter of Victims' Rights.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Witness Assistance Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Enhancing access to Witness Assistance Services and engaging with local Indigenous communities and service providers;
- Minimising stress and potential re-traumatisation for victims and witnesses related to involvement in the criminal justice system;
- Assisting the prosecution by ensuring witnesses have the opportunity to give their evidence to the best of their ability;
- Assisting the Office in meeting its obligations under the NSW Charter of Victims' Rights.
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, applicants must:
- Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
- Hold a current driver's license and willingness to travel to regional areas;
- Have experience in counselling or case management in trauma-related areas such as child sexual assault, adult sexual assault, domestic violence and/or grief and loss.
