Job Title: Authorized Officer (AO)

 

Job Summary

The Authorized Officer (AO) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe execution of maintenance activities on naval vessels during off-duty periods. Working closely with Prime Contractors, Navy Engineering staff, and repair agents, the AO ensures that maintenance is conducted in a secure and controlled environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Confirm electrical/mechanical isolation requirements with system/equipment owners
  • Eliminate the need for working on live electrical equipment
  • Understand testing procedures and be proficient in the use of testing equipment
  • Assess and approve all activities where hazardous energy may be present and issue permits to work
  • Verify isolations are complete and report instances of incomplete or missing physical locking devices
  • Complete personal danger tags and record details according to system/equipment owners' processes
  • Inspect workplaces after completion of activities, ensuring safe removal of personal danger tags and updating relevant logs
  • Conduct equipment inspections utilizing Allship proformas
  • Attend Critical Risk meetings as the Allship CRMT representative
  • Liaise with clients to prioritize scheduling of isolations
  • Conduct High-Risk tasks within scope of High-Risk Work Licence
  • Ensure personal safety and the safety of those around you at all times
  • Participate in WHS consultation through Pre-Start meetings, Toolbox Talks, and Safety Stand-downs
  • Comply with client and site requirements as outlined in inductions and directed by Client Safety Officers

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (MEM30205) or higher (essential)
  • Construction white card (essential)
  • C-class driver's licence (essential)
  • RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces (desirable)
  • RIIRIS201E - Conduct local risk control (desirable)
  • MSMWHS201 - Conduct hazard analysis (desirable)
  • MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres (desirable)
  • MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit (desirable)
  • MSMPER300 - Issue work permits (desirable)

 

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in Marine Trade or Systems Engineering
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete Risk Assessment Tools
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete Inductions and Safety questionnaires
  • Ability to read and understand engineering schematics/drawings
  • Effective communication skills for safe operation in industrial and marine workplaces
  • Physical ability to climb ladders and stairwells on ships
  • Willingness to travel at short notice for CRMT AO duties
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft 365

 

Benefits and Work Environment:

This full-time, permanent position offers a competitive hourly rate of $55-$65. The schedule includes Monday to Friday, with overtime and weekend availability. Supplemental pay types include overtime pay. Education requirements include Certificate I-IV, while mechanical engineering experience of 2 years is preferred. Licenses/Certifications required include White Card and Driver Licence, with Australia being the primary work authorization location.
