Director and Chief of Staff, Indigenous Portfolio

The Director and Chief of Staff, Indigenous Portfolio at the University of Melbourne plays a critical role in advancing Indigenous participation and Indigenous knowledges in education and research. This position leads the coordinated development and implementation of the University's Indigenous strategy in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) and Indigenous leadership across the University.
Key Responsibilities- Provide high-level and expert advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), the Associate Provost, the Vice-Chancellor, Provost, Deans, and other senior University officers on a wide range of Indigenous-related issues.
- Lead and develop a high-performing, culturally aware expert team.
- Shape strategic thinking with respect to the broad range of Indigenous issues within the University and externally.
- A strong strategic mindset, exceptional communication and collaboration skills, and demonstrated ability to deliver program outcomes that advance Indigenous knowledge and leadership and achieve University objectives.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures, and the ability to work respectfully with Indigenous Australians, including academic and community leaders, staff, and students.
- Conceptual agility, diplomacy, strong personal ethics, and commitment to continuous learning.
The Indigenous Strategy team, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous, develops, monitors, and reports on the University's Indigenous strategy, while managing external and statutory reporting on Indigenous outcomes. They implement key Signature Projects under the Murmuk Djerring strategy and support Faculties and Chancellery in advancing their Indigenous strategies.
