Position Overview

The Animation Technical Supervisor plays a crucial role within our team, working closely under the guidance of the Head of Department. This position is typically aligned with one or more productions, where the supervisor will assist and collaborate with Department Supervisors, Leads, and Artists. The primary focus is on developing, documenting, and enhancing artist tools and workflows that are essential for producing high-quality animation efficiently and consistently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze the technical needs of ongoing and upcoming projects to assist Department Supervisors in identifying necessary tool and workflow enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Department Supervisors and Heads of Department to ensure alignment with departmental goals and future initiatives.
  • Engage with Animation Heads of Department and Technical Supervisors across various locations to maintain consistency in tools and workflows company-wide.
  • Facilitate communication with other departments to ascertain their requirements and relay these to upstream teams, such as Rigging, Layout, and CFX.
  • Ensure timely delivery of tools and workflows by effectively managing personal tasks and coordinating with development teams and cross-departmental communication.
  • Guarantee that tools and workflows meet the department's quality standards.
  • Serve as the product owner for projects that necessitate Production Technology resources.
  • Act as a liaison between artists and the Production Technology department, contributing to relevant committees to advance our technology strategy.
  • Provide support and training to team members on tools and workflows, collaborating with the Training Team and Pipe TDs and Developers as needed.
  • Assist in the transition of tool maintenance and support from the department to the Production Technology team, ensuring proper documentation and maintainability of code.

Essential Qualifications

  • Extensive production experience with Maya and Linux in the Film Industry (5+ years).
  • Proficient in Jira and Shotgun (3+ years).
  • Experience in managing or mentoring small teams of animators or pipe TDs (2+ years).
  • Strong communication skills to bridge the gap between animators and technical teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and foresight in identifying potential issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of animation department workflows within the broader production pipeline.
  • Insight into how animation tools and pipelines enhance workflow and scheduling.
  • Direct experience in an artist role, providing insight into the daily tasks and pressures faced by artists.
  • Knowledge of developing tools that integrate into larger systems.
  • Ability to proactively identify and resolve issues before they affect the team.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for global collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Character/Creature Animation production.
  • Familiarity with Python or Mel scripting related to animation tools.
  • Understanding of Layout department workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of Rigging department workflows.
  • Awareness of USD and its application in Maya and animation pipelines.
