Public Policy and Government Relations Leader
">The role of Public Policy and Government Relations Leader is a critical position that requires a seasoned operator who can interpret complex policy environments, shape advocacy strategies, and build trust with government officials, elected representatives and policy stakeholders.
">This leader will be responsible for leading the development and execution of BHP's public policy and government relations strategy within Queensland ensuring alignment with Asset and organisational priorities across both state and national contexts, in close collaboration with the Federal Government team.
">Key responsibilities include:
">- Monitoring and analysing political, policy and regulatory developments to anticipate risk and opportunity, and translating insights into strategic advocacy and campaign planning.">
- Building and maintaining trusted, influential relationships with political stakeholders, government officials, and policy influencers at state and national levels, ensuring BHP's voice is heard early and often in policy formation.">
- Representing BHP in high-level political and policy forums, advocating for outcomes that support long-term business success and social value creation.">
- Providing strategic advice and counsel to Asset leadership on political, policy and regulatory matters, supporting informed decision-making and risk management.">
- Leading and coaching the Public Policy and Government Relations team in QLD fostering a high-performance culture and supporting professional development.">
- Overseeing campaign and content development, ensuring messaging is compelling, evidence-based and aligned with BHP's values and reputation.">
Requirements include:
">- A politically astute and policy-minded leader with a proven track record in government relations, advocacy and strategic engagement.">
- Deep expertise in navigating complex political and regulatory environments, and understanding how to influence outcomes through relationships, evidence and timing.">
- Experience in public policy and government relations might have included roles as a chief of staff or senior adviser to a government minister at the state or national level, as a director or senior leader as a consultant in public policy or public affairs, leadership roles in public policy or corporate affairs in the private sector or experience as a member of the senior executive service of the public service.">
- Tertiary qualifications in public policy, economics, political science, law or commerce would be advantageous.">
- Ability to elevate teams and drive outcomes.">
- Trusted advisor to senior stakeholders, offering insightful, politically attuned advice that connects business strategy with public policy and community expectations.">
