Job Title: Independent Animal Export Observer

 

Job Description:

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry seeks a highly skilled observer to monitor the welfare and management of live animals during export.

 

Role Overview:

This position involves traveling on board live animal export vessels to observe and report on daily stock management activities, including data collection and analysis. You will also be responsible for identifying and reporting non-compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.

 

Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Observe and document daily stock management activities on board through detailed daily logs
  • Capture and catalogue still images and video footage in relation to the daily animal management activities
  • Identify and report on non-compliance and/or non-conformance with legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Provide regular reporting throughout the voyage via the LAE Observer Application
  • Participate in pre- and post-deployment operational, WHS, security training and activities
  • Undertake assigned tasks to support the Live Animal Export Branch

 

Requirements:

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in livestock management, animal welfare or related disciplines
  • Ability to provide an objective view of on-board animal management processes
  • Understand the livestock export industry
  • Meet health and fitness requirements for travel on vessels

The Plant and Live Animal Exports, Animal Welfare and Regulation Division supports Australian agriculture industries and the government through development of animal welfare policy for export and domestic issues; management of policy, operations and certification for the export of live animals, animal reproductive material, plants, and plant products.
