wagga wagga, Australia Planning Institute Australia Full time
About the Opportunity

The Planning Institute Australia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Planning Coordinator to join our team in Wagga Wagga. This is an ongoing full-time role with flexible working arrangements, including flexible working hours and opportunities for working operationally during flood and emergency events across NSW.

About the Role

As a member of our planning team, you will lead the management of planning priorities for local towns and regional areas, with a key focus on developing plans and policies that reduce the impact of flooding for at-risk communities. You will achieve this through building and influencing effective intelligence, planning, and response capability to meet community expectations and ensuring that floods, storms, and tsunami are effectively addressed across whole-of-government and private sector emergency planning frameworks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and support a small team of researchers to analyze available research data related to flood behavior, identify vulnerabilities of local communities to the consequences of storms, floods, and tsunamis, and effectively translate this research into emergency plans, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure the agency's planning process aligns with the NSW Planning Framework and internal NSW SES governance policies and guidelines.
  • Assess, prioritize, and delegate incoming referrals and risk information amongst the team to capture intelligence and data that would inform effective planning of emergency response.
  • Attend and represent the NSW SES on external forums, meetings, and committees to provide advice and share knowledge on evidence-based information relating to risks and consequences of floods to influence decisions amongst councils, emergency service agencies, and other organizations.
  • Work closely with volunteers to capture and leverage local knowledge and expertise and support effective communication and collaboration to meet operational targets.
  • Contribute to maintaining framework and templates to comply with functional and strategic objectives of the cohort team.
  • Contribute to the Branch/Zone Business Planning.
  • Work operationally when the Zone is in operational activity due to flood and storms, including being part of Incident Management Teams and providing key planning and intelligence to assist our volunteers in preparing and responding to emergencies.
About You

We want to hear from people who are motivated by research/evidence-based information, risk mitigation, and influencing external bodies in the risks and consequences of floods, storms, and tsunamis. We are interested in hearing from candidates with transferable skills and experience from various backgrounds, including:

  • Environmental, emergency, and hazard planning from private or government backgrounds.
  • Council town planners who have skills in town planning strategies to appropriately address and mitigate risks associated with emergency hazards.
  • Skills in identifying risks and consequences through analysis of data and research that informs plans and strategies to address such risks.
Requirements
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the consequences of natural hazards and subsequent risk management.
  • Demonstrated experience and awareness of planning systems and the ability to interpret and apply policy in an emergency management context.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Enjoy working with stakeholders and be proficient in building and maintaining these relationships to develop, implement, and influence community-focused solutions.
What We Can Offer

The Planning Institute Australia offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Ongoing employment with attractive leave entitlements, including paid parental leave, recreation, and flex leave, and other leave entitlements.
  • Flexible work options working within operational requirements.
  • Opportunities to build invaluable relationships across emergency service agencies, emergency service committees, and other government and community organizations.
  • Mental Health & Wellbeing programs and services.
  • Operational and leadership training and development opportunities via LinkedIn Learning and other training avenues to build and maintain skills to support career pathways.
  • Salary packaging and novated lease opportunities.
