Job Description

Position Overview

The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency Ltd (NAAJA) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated legal professional to join our Criminal Law Team as a Youth Justice Solicitor. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people charged with criminal offences.
  • Manage the multidisciplinary Youth Team, comprising lawyers, client services officers, social workers, and personal assistants.
  • Practice manage the Youth section, overseeing the allocation of work and ensuring the provision of effective legal services to clients.
  • Undertake work in the Youth Court, including duty lawyer services, bail applications, direction hearings, pleas, hearings, preliminary examinations, and youth matters in the Supreme Court.
  • Develop and implement goals in accordance with NAAJA's Strategic Plan.
  • Assist in training, development, and mentoring of youth lawyers, interns, and other staff members.
  • Identify issues that cause disadvantage to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system and assist NAAJA in responding to those issues through legal education, law reform, and community development.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders, including the Registrar of the Darwin Children's Court, Territory Families, the Education Department, and other service providers.

Selection Criteria

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in criminal law, with proven ability as a court advocate.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality oral and written advice on a range of legal issues.
  • Experience in management and mentoring of staff, including junior solicitors.
  • Capable of identifying issues that cause disadvantage to Aboriginal youth in the criminal justice system and responding to those issues through test cases, legal education, law reform, and community development.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people living in the Top End.
  • Ability to work constructively with a diverse team of legal and non-legal staff to achieve the goals of the position.
  • Good time management and organisational skills, including the ability to perform under pressure and handle high-volume workloads.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake work at circuit courts, including travel and overnight stays in remote communities.
  • Working with Children clearance and current Driver's License.
  • Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice.
