About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Operations Director to join our Executive Team and lead the operations of our Main Pathology Laboratory in South Australia.

In this executive leadership role, you will report to the Chief Executive Officer and ensure the delivery of high-quality pathology services, drive operational excellence, and maintain full compliance with regulatory requirements.

You will drive positive change, oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, supervise scientific, administrative, technical, and ancillary functions in compliance with NPAAC guidelines, and take the lead in identifying and implementing improvements to enhance all facets of the laboratory.

As Laboratory Operations Director, you will play a crucial role in the development, support, and performance of a large multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and quality.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee laboratory operations, ensuring efficient utilization of human, plant, and financial resources.
  • Monitor quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results, maintaining compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Supervise all scientific, administrative, technical, and ancillary functions.
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise in performing and overseeing diagnostic procedures, applying established and emerging techniques.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, implement changes to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Implement and monitor workflow targets to meet priority and triage requirements.
  • Ensure the laboratory complies with National Standards, including NPAAC and NATA requirements.
  • Drive clinical and non-clinical continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead and manage a team of Laboratory Supervisors and Managers to drive high performance.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support professional development through training initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and innovation.
  • BUILD strong relationships with clinicians, referring doctors, and other internal and external stakeholders.

To succeed, you will have:

  • A strong background in science, excellent people skills, and commercial acumen, with a proven ability to lead high-performing teams and cultivate effective professional relationships.
  • Tertiary qualification in Science, Applied Science, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent that meets NPAAC criteria.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Management, or a related discipline.
  • Proven leadership experience in a large organization, preferably in the pathology sector, with significant experience in laboratory supervision.
  • Exceptional communication and time management skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a busy environment and maintain attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of budgets, operational planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and confidence in using clinical computer systems.
Desirable Criteria:
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant scientific or professional field (e.g., PhD, AIMS, AACB membership or fellowship, RCPA Faculty of Science Fellowship).
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in phlebotomy.
  • Technical knowledge of laboratory or diagnostic medicine.
  • Proven ability to manage and lead teams effectively.
  • Proven ability to drive change management processes.
