About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Principal Veterinary Officer to lead our International Strategy and Engagement Section. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in representing Australia's animal health status and systems internationally, with a focus on engagement with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer in their role as Australia's Delegate to WOAH
  • Lead engagement with multilateral organisations, industry representatives, state and territory governments, and international counterparts
  • Ensure international recognition of Australia's animal health status and systems
  • Meet Australia's international animal health reporting obligations
  • Influence global animal health policy and international standards to ensure they are science-based and achieve their purpose without imposing unjustified burden
  • Support the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer as lead to the Animal Health Quadrilateral Alliance
  • Respond to domestic veterinary industry issues, including workforce challenges, educational reform, and government engagement
Requirements
  • Strong understanding of Australia's animal health and biosecurity systems, including government and industry structures and surveillance programs
  • Experience working in international animal health
  • Experience developing and implementing long-term multilateral strategies while managing sensitivities and high-level relationships
  • Understanding of international animal health and trade governance, including Australia's obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement
  • Strong understanding of the role and function of WOAH, including processes for disease reporting and international standard setting
  • Experience engaging at national, international, and multilateral settings, including leading projects and programs of work, consultation, or working groups
  • Veterinary degree from an Australian university or equivalent veterinary qualification recognised in Australia, and registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant Australian state/territory veterinary board
