**Job Opportunity:**

 

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Support Specialist to join our team in Newcastle. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the setup, management, maintenance, and operation of our laboratory facilities.

 

The successful candidate will have relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in chemistry and/or laboratory management and procedures. They will also have experience working in and/or managing a laboratory where hazardous chemicals and compressed gases are used.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting staff in maintaining good housekeeping and up-to-date chemical manifests in laboratory areas.
  • Assisting staff in the safe procurement, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and equipment.
  • Assisting staff in the loading/unloading and movement around the site of gas bottles and large equipment.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment to keep it in good working order.
  • Ensuring stocks of consumables are maintained.

 

The role requires discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team's plan and to plan ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands. The successful candidate will also oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on experimental/technological techniques and protocols as required.

 

Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, the Laboratory Support Specialist will carry out tasks in support of CSIRO's scientific objectives.
