Community Context:

The Noonkanbah Aboriginal Community is a remote Aboriginal settlement located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. This culturally rich area is home to the Yungngora people and serves as a gateway to other inland communities. The residents actively engage in preserving their cultural practices and languages, supported by essential services such as a medical center and educational facilities.

The local economy thrives on cattle farming and arts and crafts, providing various employment opportunities. Living in this remote area offers the chance to be part of a close-knit community, deeply engaged with Indigenous culture and traditions.

Role Responsibilities:

The Ranger Coordinator will lead a team of four Rangers in executing the Ranger Program for the Yungngora Community. Key responsibilities include:

  • Empowering Yungngora people in managing their land and engaging with the Land and Culture program.
  • Facilitating the transfer of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices among Traditional Owners and the community.
  • Providing on-ground support to achieve Land and Culture program goals.
  • Coordinating the implementation of annual Ranger teamwork plans, including logistics and administrative tasks.
  • Overseeing various field activities such as cultural heritage management and species management.
  • Assisting in the development of annual work plans and compliance with funding agreements.
  • Collaborating with Traditional Owners on land access activities and research related to Native Title.
  • Managing GIS data and maintaining accurate records of project activities.
  • Providing field support to visitors and Traditional Owners.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in fieldwork.
  • Preparing project plans, reports, and financial documentation as required.
  • Communicating project outcomes effectively to diverse audiences.

Candidate Profile:

  • Willingness to reside in a remote Aboriginal community.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role managing rangers.
  • Ability to work autonomously and within small teams.
  • Practical skills for technical tasks and the ability to mentor others.
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Capacity to prioritize and develop flexible work programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current driver's license and ability to obtain necessary checks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities and understanding their challenges.
  • Familiarity with four-wheel drive vehicles and field maintenance.
  • Experience in GPS/GIS data collection and software.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices in remote settings.
