This Behaviour Support role involves working in a special education environment to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas.
  • Assisting with communication between students and teachers, particularly the interpretation of instructions.
  • Providing basic physical and emotional care for students.
  • Participating in team meetings.
  • Assisting with toileting, meals, lifting, and administration of medication to students requiring special care.
  • Supervising pupils in playgrounds, at camps, on excursions, in sporting activities, therapy activities and life skills.
  • Preparing educational resources.
  • Setting up and putting away equipment and materials in support of teaching programs.
  • Observing students and drawing the attention of the teacher to them where necessary.
  • Monitoring and evaluating programs and evaluating individual student involvement and achievement.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated capacity to support in planning and implementing programs for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, particularly those displaying challenging behaviour.
  • Capacity to work cooperatively with a range of people including students, leadership, teachers and education staff.
  • Capacity to undertake classroom and student support tasks across a range of functions within a Special Education environment.
  • A commitment to professional learning and growth.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Child Safe practices, when working with children, including those with a disability.
