As a leader in medical defence litigation, we are seeking an experienced professional to join our team as a Legal Team Manager or Special Counsel. This role offers the opportunity to progress your career and lead a dedicated team of lawyers who are passionate about defending medical practitioners.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in managing and supervising medical defendant lawyers, with a genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of lawyers in this specialised area of law. You will be responsible for conducting your own civil file load, managing the civil litigation team, and ensuring high-quality legal services are provided to our members.

This is a full-time permanent position based out of our Melbourne office, with hybrid working arrangements. The key responsibilities include:

  • Civil File Management: Conducting your own civil file load and managing the civil litigation team in accordance with KPIs, ensuring billing targets are met and high-quality legal services are provided.
  • Team Supervision: Provision and supervision of lawyers with a range of PQE experience to deliver sustainable, timely, and efficient legal services.
  • Resource Coordination: Coordination of resourcing and workflows within the civil team, ensuring the management of claims in accordance with agreed protocols, standards, and procedures.
  • Mentoring and Development: Supervision, mentoring, and development of civil team lawyers and paralegals to enable career development for staff within the team.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 10+ years PQE ideal
  • Experience in leadership or strong interest in people development
  • Defence medical negligence and insurance law experience ideal
  • Demonstrated health law knowledge
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills
