Communication operators are critical to the success of any law enforcement agency. They serve as a vital link between the public and emergency responders, providing crucial information and support in high-pressure situations.

Our communication operators work in a fast-paced environment, responding to calls and requests for assistance from the community. They must be able to think clearly and make sound judgments in order to provide accurate and timely information to police units.

The role of a communication operator is multifaceted and requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Initial appointment is on a fixed-term temporary basis, requiring completion of a Communications Operator Training Program (approximately 6 months).
  • Participate in a 24-hour, 7-day roster with 36.25 hours per week, including shift penalties.
  • Successful applicants may undergo alcohol and/or other drug testing.
  • A recent keyboard skills certificate indicating 40 words per minute with 98% accuracy is required.
  • Shortlisted applicants will undergo typing, call taker simulation, cognitive ability assessments.
  • Successful applicants require a psychological assessment.
  • Provide an approved PEMS hearing test, including Pure Tone Audiometry and Speech Discrimination Assessment.
  • Undertake regular hearing testing as part of ongoing employment.
