The role of a Graduate Environmental Health Officer is to support the monitoring and regulation of food and health premises across the city. This includes carrying out inspections and regulatory actions for various types of premises, such as food businesses, public pools, and boarding houses.

As a key member of our Public Health and Environment team, you will be responsible for investigating environmental issues and major pollution incidents, supporting the implementation of educational programs on public and environmental health, and providing input on Development Applications involving contaminated land or environmental concerns.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular inspections and enforcement activities at food premises, skin penetration businesses, public pools, cooling towers, and boarding houses.
  • Assist in investigations of environmental issues and major pollution incidents, including identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement educational programs to promote public and environmental health, in collaboration with community stakeholders and external agencies.
  • Provide expert advice on Development Applications involving contaminated land or environmental concerns, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and represent Council in formal meetings, communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with external agencies and community stakeholders on public health matters, fostering strong relationships and partnerships.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and uphold legislative compliance, maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have recently completed a tertiary qualification in Environmental Health or Public Health. You will also possess a sound understanding of relevant legislation, including the Local Government Act, Food Act, and Public Health Act.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is excellent problem-solving and investigative skills. A current Class C Driver's Licence is also required.
