About the Position

This is an exciting opportunity for a Scientist/Senior Scientist to join a dynamic team at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, leading the development of a new biologics-based technology. The successful applicant will drive the development of the new technology platform, including the design, purification, and optimization of novel biologics-based therapies.

The applicant will collaborate closely with the institute's cell biology and preclinical biology teams and will be responsible for designing, expressing, purifying, and characterizing proteins, including antibodies and nanobodies. They will also be responsible for coordinating contract research organizations to deliver key pieces of work.

The successful applicant will work alongside a supportive and multi-disciplinary team and build their research program with input from senior researchers. The institute models a culture that is people-centric, team-driven, and flexible, prioritizing career development and job satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, express, purify, and characterize proteins, including antibodies and nanobodies
  • Collaborate with cell biology and preclinical biology teams to develop new biologics-based therapies
  • Coordinate contract research organizations to deliver key pieces of work
  • Build and lead a research program with input from senior researchers

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline, such as biochemistry, structural biology, or molecular biology
  • Highly experienced with techniques including protein engineering, mammalian cell expression, and protein purification
  • Highly experienced in biophysical assays, including SPR/BLI
  • Significant biotech/industry experience and/or an excellent academic record that has led to publications

Desirable Qualifications

  • Drug discovery and development experience
  • Antibody/nanobody engineering and purification experience
  • Program management skills and experience

  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Good communication skills, and an ability to work both autonomously and cooperatively within a team environment

  • Interested in translational, goal-focussed research

Terms of Appointment

This position is available for 16 months in a full-time capacity. After the first year of employment, there may be opportunity for further full-time employment at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

Salary is commensurate with an industry role and is offered as a Research Officer Level A7-A8 ($104,744 - $108,453) or Senior Research Officer Level B1-B6 ($101,039 - $135,568) depending on experience. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available. Employees will also be eligible for share options in the spinout company.
