Research Position
The University of Sydney is seeking a skilled professional to support the Fish Seascapes Project. As part of this initiative, you will work as part of an ARC Linkage funded project and contribute to the advancement of fish connectivity and populations research.
About the Role
- Support senior researchers in the overall organisation of the project and its team;
- Organise and lead field campaigns to collect data from marine environments;
- Process and analyse data from marine systems, including boating, snorkeling, and diving;
- Collaborate with scientists, technicians, and managers on various research projects;
- Assist with data analysis and writing of research outputs;
Responsibilities
- Support timely research execution, ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures;
- Facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders, address concerns proactively, and foster collaboration;
- Manage purchasing, payments, and invoice processing;
- Prioritise and coordinate health and safety activities;
- Plan and lead coastal fieldwork, organise logistics, maintain equipment, and ensure safety and ethics compliance;
- Assist with data collection and analysis, process biological data, and coordinate accurate reporting and documentation of research outputs;
Requirements
- BSc (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as marine biology;
- Current NSW drivers license - minimum class C;
- NSW recreational boating license or equivalent;
- Experience conducting marine fieldwork, including animal tracking and general fish ecology-related research;
- Demonstrated technical experience in marine biodiversity assessment and implementation of scientific monitoring programs;
- Demonstrated experience contributing to managing large datasets and comfortable using MS Office suite;
- Experienced snorkeler;
- Experience operating boats in marine environments and trailering them;
- Experience working in large teams;
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail;
- Scientific diving qualification (AS2815.6 - Restricted Occupational Scuba Diving);
- Experience with data collection, QAQC procedures, and data analysis;
- Experience with 'R' programming language;
- Fish dissection experience, including otolith analysis;
- Analysis of video data from marine systems (e.g., BRUVs, DOVs);
